Gardening Margarita Engle
Each afternoon when I walked home from school I found my mother kneeling in her own rippling pool of grateful flowers.
She battled the reluctant earth so peacefully that I imagined gardening must be a gentle art.
Many years passed before I discovered the weary rage that drives a woman outdoors to slice hard soil and stubborn weeds in search of patient buds and hidden roots.
