Gardening

Margarita Engle

Each afternoon

when I walked home from school

I found my mother kneeling

in her own rippling pool

of grateful flowers.

She battled

the reluctant earth

so peacefully

that I imagined gardening

must be

a gentle art.

Many years passed

before I discovered the weary rage

that drives a woman

outdoors

to slice hard soil and stubborn weeds

in search of patient buds

and hidden roots.
